With almost three decades of artistic activity, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra cultivates the dreams of passionate youngsters who long to express themselves through the mystical language of music.
With the onset of the new artistic season, the cream of the musical youth of Cyprus presents an enlivening concert experience on September 3. Talented 12-year-old Ela Kallides, a violinist at the CyYSO, makes her solo debut in Wieniawski’s highly virtuosic and marvellously expressive 2nd violin concerto, while Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony is the perfect match for the romantic tone of the evening, “a striking work” that “seems to spring from some dark spiritual experience,” as Russian critic and composer Berezovsky most eloquently wrote.
“An enchanting orchestra led by an inspiring maestro, a young virtuoso, and a driving passion that unites all sets us up for a memorable evening,” organisers say.
Born in Poland, Ela has been playing the violin since she was six years old. Her passion for music developed rapidly and a year later, in 2014, Ela became a scholar at the Music School of the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra (CyYSO). Her enthusiasm and dedication to music grew even more when in 2017 she was admitted as the 1st violin of the CyYSO, under the baton of Yiorgos Kountouris.
As far as her passion and dedication are concerned, Ela gives thanks to her teacher Irina Goubler and the moment she was accepted into the Music School of the CyYSO at the age of 7, her heart opened fully to the sound of music, she says.
Being selected to play as a soloist with the CyYSO in the autumn concert, and perform one of the most virtuosic and emotionally demanding romantic concertos for violin is quite the task for a young musician, yet Ela says she feels both excited and privileged.
“It is such an honour for me that I have been selected to play as a soloist with the CyYSO. I feel that this shows appreciation towards my work, often very hard and exhausting but always rewarding with the final beauty of the sound that I can get from my violin. It is a great pleasure to approach a virtuosic piece like Wieniawski’s 2nd violin concerto and feel that every note played is meaningful and fulfilling. I feel really delighted and thankful to my teacher, our conductor and my parents for their faith in me.”
For those who have yet to come into contact with Wieniawski’s 2nd violin concerto, Ela says the uniqueness of this concerto for her is the changes in its moods, which are expressed by a variety of different techniques. “You can actually feel every emotion which you are obliged to control technically, in order to convey it right to the listeners and to perfectly enjoy the concerto while playing,” she explains.
“Thanks to the CyYSO, my teacher and our conductor I can say I’m a little musician and I love it!”
The concert in September will take place at Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia and will begin at 8.30pm. Tickets can be purchased online at www.cyso.org.cy, Pallas Theatre box office or at the venue two hours before the concerto.
