After two years playing at Jazz festivals, venues and music schools, Junkey Moneywise, a progressive/modern jazz trio from Nicosia, presents a series of shows called Awakening in the island’s major cities, starting in Paphos. Awakening is the musical result of this two-year journey and it is entirely made up of original compositions of the band, which they plan to record sometime this year.
The live performances have received major critical acclaim, mostly due to the highly energetic style of polyrhythmic and complex passages leading to more atmospheric, downtempo parts, combining European Jazz influence with neo-soul, Latin jazz and even Eastern Music.
And so Vasilis Vourvopoulos on piano/keyboards, Marinos Kassinos on bass and Markos Ioannou on drums will perform on Friday at Technopolis 20. All three members have a long-standing relationship with music which they’ve shared both locally and abroad. Vasilis Vourvopoulos studied Piano, Harmony and Counterpoint Diploma and specialised in Piano Performance. In the last few years he has composed and arranged music for theatre and is a performing musician for artists both from Cyprus and Greece. He teaches theory and harmony at Arte Music Academy and both theory and piano at the Hellenic Conservatory of Music.
Also involved in theatre world is Marinos Kassinos who upon his return to Cyprus performed professionally with multiple bands and artists while also composing music for theatre, tv and radio, honouring his Master’s in composition. Since 2011 he works as a music tutor and performer.
The final member of Junkey Moneywise has been part of bands as a drummer since he was 16. He studied modern music in LAB Music Education in Athens, while playing regularly all over Greece. In 2012 he returned to Cyprus and since then has worked as a music educator while performing regularly in various bands in Cyprus and abroad.
