October may be a long way off but the Short Film Festival of Cyprus, staged in Limassol, is already getting ready for its ninth edition. It has opened its call for entries, fiction, documentaries, experimental, student and animation short films not exceeding 25 minutes in length, to be submitted for a chance to be screened later on this year.
Held annually, the festival promotes cinematographic art by presenting a diverse programme of short films from around the globe, and showcases the work of talented filmmakers who successfully use creative cinematic language forms to effectively tell a story in a short film. The festival’s aim is to promote and propagate short films and to develop a spirit of friendship and cooperation among filmmakers.
The Ministry of Education and Rialto Theatre have announced an open call for submissions via the filmefreeway.com platform, which will remain open until June 1. A five-member international Jury will award the prizes to the films competing in the National and International Competition sections.
Cypriot films compete for both the International and the National awards of the Ministry of Education, while the festival notes that Cypriot directors who live and work in Cyprus or abroad are entitled to submit their work.
This year the festival has been selected by the European Film Academy to join the network of its partner festivals. As a result, it will have the right to nominate one short film for the European Film Academy Awards.
